Climate games

Plant a forest. Power a park. Try a different way of doing things.

Eight interactive experiences from Envirolution, Manchester’s environmental co-operative. Explore on your own, bring them to a workshop or start a climate conversation with your group.

The playable collection

Small experiments.
Big questions.

Choose a topic that catches your imagination. Each game opens here on the Envirolution website, with its own choices, instructions and things to explore.

House artwork for Eco Home Upgrade
Homes · energy · water

Eco Home Upgrade

Work with a £20,000 game budget to choose insulation, clean heating, solar, ventilation and other upgrades. Compare the model’s carbon, bill-saving, comfort and water scores.

Play Eco Home Upgrade
Plan your retrofit

The game opens as “Eco-Upgrade My Home”. Select an upgrade to read about it and install it, or drag it onto the house. Choose “Finish retrofit” to review your package.

The figures are illustrative game values, not quotes, grant advice or a survey of your home.

Landscape artwork for Build the Biodome
Ecosystems · food webs

Build the Biodome

Choose a biome and build a food web with producers, consumers, decomposers and buffer habitats. Place them on your board and run a report on biodiversity, balance and resilience.

Play Build the Biodome
Build a living system

Choose a biome, select a species or habitat feature, then select an empty cell. “Start Simulation” gives a design report; it is not an animated population simulation.

The current placement board needs a pointer or touch input; it is not yet keyboard accessible.

Fungal network artwork for Mycelium Maze
Fungi · forest networks

Mycelium Maze

Grow a fungal network through neighbouring hexagons to connect trees. Explore three levels with drought and disease cells, while tracking nutrients, water support and resilience.

Play Mycelium Maze
Follow the connections

Start on any cell, then grow into connected neighbours. Reach five trees to progress. Cells support Enter and Space, but their current accessible labels do not yet describe all hazards and tree positions.

A larger screen gives the ten-column board more room.

Climate Career Quest artwork
Green skills · climate careers

Climate Career Quest

Answer eight questions about your interests and preferred ways of working. Explore a suggested climate career family, related matches, skills and possible routes into the work.

Try Climate Career Quest
Follow your curiosity

Choose the answer that sounds most like you. The quiz uses buttons rather than dragging, and you can restart to try different answers.

Treat the match as an invitation to explore, not a qualification assessment or a promise of a job.

Glass, metal and plastic recycling bin illustration
Waste · recycling · compost

Recycling Rumble

Sort everyday items into four waste streams across a series of rounds. Choose a difficulty and item mix, build a streak and review the explanations behind your answers.

Play Recycling Rumble
Sort, then rethink

The game opens as “Recycle or Rethink?”. Select an item, then a bin, or drag it into place. Keyboard selection uses Enter or Space. There is no countdown timer.

Real recycling collections vary. Check your council’s current guidance before using the game’s sorting rules at home.

Digital Assembly ballot box illustration
Community · climate decisions

Digital Assembly

Read climate proposals, choose support, oppose or “need more info”, and explore results. Create a ballot from fixed templates about transport, homes, food, nature or waste.

Explore Digital Assembly
Understand the voting tool

Choose a topic and read a proposal before voting. If the live service is unavailable, the tool uses votes and template ballots stored on this device. Local results are not a community-wide mandate.

This is separate from Manchester’s historical 2021 assembly. Read the context before using it with a group.

A work in progress, open to your feedback. The games use JavaScript and are still being tested across screen sizes and input types. The hub works without JavaScript; individual games have different access needs. Open “Before you…” or the instructions beneath each game for specifics, and tell us about an access problem.

How to start

Pick an idea. Give it a go.

You do not need to know every answer before you begin.

  1. Choose a game

Follow a subject you care about: a healthier forest, a warmer home or what your neighbourhood needs.

    Find your starting point
  2. Play & explore

Read the instructions, make a choice and see what changes. Try another mix, compare a different answer or start again.

  3. Talk it through

What did the game leave out? What would be different in your own home, park or community? Bring those questions into the conversation.

Why games belong here

Climate learning is something we do together.

Envirolution’s work brings environmental ideas into places where people can participate, not just listen.

Discover Envirolution’s approach to education

At our festivals, that has meant workshops, creative activities and conversations alongside music and community projects. These games offer another way in: a small space to try a choice, notice a connection and ask a better question.

They turn different environmental themes into something you can explore. The models simplify real life; they are starting points for discussion, not substitutes for local knowledge or specialist advice.

  • Nature: what changes when you build variety into a forest or food web?
  • Everyday choices: how do energy, comfort, cost and waste fit together?
  • Participation: whose priorities need to be heard when a community makes a decision?

Community learning, with context

A tool for exploring decisions. Not the 2021 assembly.

The Digital Assembly on this site is an interactive tool for exploring proposals and guided ballots. It includes result summaries and JSON/CSV exports, with a local-device mode when the live service cannot be reached.

It is not the historical Manchester Community Assembly on Climate Change, and its votes are not the official results of that event. In 2021, Envirolution brought 106 participants together in Manchester to learn, discuss and develop proposals.

If you want to use Digital Assembly to collect views from a group, contact Envirolution first to confirm how collection and results will work for your session.

Games in the community

Bring a game.
Start a conversation.

These tools are intended for self-guided learning, workshops, schools, assemblies and festival stalls. Talk to us about using them at your event or with your group.

A shared screen can be a place to compare choices, ask questions and try again together. Test your chosen game on the devices and input methods your participants will use before the session.
